Eating disorder therapy in Manchester, the UK and Europe generally has been far behind many countries in developing alternative and complimentary approaches to this far reaching illness which has caused so much misery and lost time for so many people.
It isn’t just the more recognised anorexia and bulimia which are increasing in our society it is also the other conditions taken far less seriously of comfort eating, binge eating disorder and compulsive overeating which although less life threatening, also create so much internal turmoil and self loathing with as much absolute compulsion and constant thoughts about it, which cause just as much misery.
For those of us who have had an eating disorder, we are aware of the continual thoughts of eating, food, pressure to eat, compulsion to eat and cravings, that terminal feeling of self loathing which is indescribable to others and the outstanding body image issues as well. For women it is generally more socially acceptable to ask for help in the form of eating disorder therapy than for men but this is changing.
The fear of putting on weight prohibits us from addressing it and so we keep going even though you are screaming for it to stop and want help, it can be terrifying.
This is where my approach is different.
The underlying issues are addressed, the self esteem and the other problems which contribute to it. Usually a feeling of being “less than” or in the case of compulsive eating and comfort eating, an emotional attachment in some way which results in the reaction to eat which needs to be disconnected.
The techniques I use are based on a revolutionary discovery by a psychiatrist in the US in relation to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which saw a brain pattern emerging during a period of compulsive behaviour. The system constists of therapy work in office but also a self management plan given to the client as well to continue with the new overlay of behaviour.
The one thing we do not address in the case of anorexia and bulimia – is to make you eat. We in fact ignore than initially and purely work on the issues which underlie that. We then address the issues which will have happened to the metabolism and start to speed it up to allow you to intake nutrients which will not put weight on but help your system to recover. It is about getting you well, givng you back head space to be able to get on with your life and reach all the goals you wanted to – then in your own time if it feels ok to put on a little weight then you can but you will never allow yourself to get as overweight and you always feared you might!
For compulsive over eaters, comfort eaters and binge eaters this is something very different. We look for the connection between the feelings you get when you eat or are about to and find out what it is you are gaining which has been accidentally attached to food or a certain type of food. Again a self management programme is give to you as well so you can start to embed new reactions and behaviours.
