Bulimia, also called bulimia nervosa, is a psychological eating disorder. Bulimia is characterized by episodes of binge-eating followed by inappropriate methods of weight control which include vomiting, fasting, enemas, excessive use of laxatives and diuretics, or compulsive exercising. This can be a highly distressing condition which can seriously take over and run your life and potentially be life threatening in extreme cases.
The problem with bulimia is the isolation. There is a great deal of shame associated with any kind of eating disorder, especially binges, which will have a direct impact on confidence and the inability for many sufferers to be able to talk openly about it.
Binge eating is not a response to intense hunger. It is usually a response to depression, stress, or self esteem issues. During the binge episode, the individual experiences a loss of control or may also experience a real "rush" or a feeling of anticipation in the build up.
People with bulimia can look perfectly normal. Most of them are of normal weight, and some may be overweight.
At present, a majority of my past bulimic clients have been men and there have been recent studies which suggests this may be a national trend rather than just in my office! I have been extremely pleased with the success rate of clients with bulimia overcoming the problem and my only request with treatment of eating disorders is continuation honesty no matter what.
The problem can be hugely diverse and clients also tend to have another addiction or compulsion which runs concurrently and generally are perfectionists or high achievers who tend to become very focused on whatever they turn their attention to.
My approach is somewhat different to other therapists. Having worked with eating related disorders, weight issues and body image problems for many years as well as having had my own, rather than working on the symptoms we look for the cause at root level first. In some cases I may need to have a GP referral, this depends on varying circumstances so please email or call me to discuss the options available.
The aim with bulimia is to find the underlying cause, define the exact pattern and then break it down and divert the behavior. We also work on your self esteem and your own image of yourself and how you feel after you have eaten and before the binge. Your body image changes in those moments and so do feelings towards yourself so we have to work on and change those triggers to end this cycle.
Most clients require ongoing support between sessions which can be email or phone, in order to help you through the stages of change which can be quite uncomfortable, especially if you have had the problem for years and it is almost like an old friend.
If you would like to deal with this now and would like to discuss it further please contact me on the form below or call.
